I'm More Childish Than I Realized
I’m not proud about it, but I did take your suggestions to play a prank on my secretary. I hid her cordless phone in a file cabinet. (I stole the idea from that episode of The Office when Pam and Jim hid Andy’s cell phone in the ceiling above his desk and kept calling.) It didn’t take her too long to find it, but it did give me a moment’s pleasure and a strange rush of adrenaline.
I’m looking for some good photos to put on her computer desktop. Any suggestions? Other prank ideas?

How about some sort of running clock? You could tell her it was software that filled out her timecard automatically, based on when she turned her computer on and off, so there were no more misunderstandings about lunch breaks, etc.
Bet she wouldn't be fudging her timeslip then!
My boss used to delight in taking my car keys and moving my car to a different parking spot so that I was quite confused at the end of the day. It was funny... but only in retrospect! :)
That episode of the Office is one of my favorites. I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face.
niiice. I would have snickered too.
I once turned over the template that is on one of my co-worker's telephones and replaced employee names with nicknames, like Buster, Sparky and Dutchess.
So when he wanted to call, let's say "Jim" he had to decide which nickname might be his.
Fun was had by all.
Did her cell phone play "Rockin' Robin?"
My husband's favorite prank is popping off a couple of keys on the keyboard and switching them. But that only works for people who don't know how to touch-type.
Not to be a complete wet blanket - I like torturing/teasing as much as the next person. But in our litigious environment and considering that you are her boss you need to be really (REALLY!!!) careful to either not be discovered and/or not doing anything that could be considered harassment/unfriendly work environment. If you proceed, if/when she leaves and if/when she files for unemployment and if you contest the grant of unemployment benefits this could be brought up.
PS - I do like the running clock - automatic timecard filling idea though
swf--that would be interesting; unfortunately, I think she's smart enough to figure it out.
bre--I REALLY want to try that one.
dc--fortunately, I was in my office when the phone rang and I heard her say, "Where's my phone?"
love monkey--she doesn't have that sort of template; we're too small.
lv--that's another great idea, too.
g-dog--dang; you're probably right.
I like it on The Office where the phone was stuck in the phone of gelatinous pudding.
That's my vote.
Embrace your youthful fun-filled spirit (you are not childish - you are fun).
Sorry if I rained on your parade - but there was an unemployment lawsuit locally and while the facts were different - if your secretary is willing to lie on her time card - odds are she will sue for unemployment should the opportunity arise. And - I would in a legal group in a corporation - it can make you a little twitchy....
ack - I work in a legal department....
damn typos..
